Insurance - Buying The Right Policy!

We may hate paying the premiums but when things go wrong insurance can be a financial lifesaver. However claims can, and sometimes do, get refused, or payouts can be less than expected. Of course it's important to get your cover at the lowest possible cost, but we are all unique so it's just as important to make sure that it is the right policy for you. This is why, for each type of policy, we will be spelling out not only how to pay a low price for it but also the most common reasons for claims to be made, and ways in which you can avoid the dreaded 'claims refusal'.

Insurers can no longer hide behind obscure small print to refuse claims; everything has to be clear and easy to find, and written in plain English. This is a double edged sword though. There is no point complaining to the Insurance Ombudsman if your claim is turned down for a reason that was spelt out right at the start; and this is why the majority of appeals fail.

It is also the reason why it is vital that you read through the insurance documentation that you are given access to before you actually buy a policy. That way you will know what you are buying, and what is expected of you in exchange for the insurer meeting any future claim. There is no point afterwards saying you didn't read it if the insurer points out that what you are claiming for isn't covered by your policy!
